Solar Power Your Home with a simple design. The following will be needed for a stand alone system.
1. Deep cycle batteries. You can find either 12v or 6v (2 will be needed in a series). These will allow you to store energy from your panel(s) when the sun is unavailable.
2. Charge controller. This will provide a steady charge from and to your batteries. Having intermittent power spikes and draws will shorten the life of your battery or batteries.
3. An inverter. This turns the DC current into a clean sine wave known as AC or alternating current. AC is the basis for most of your appliances. You could also invest in DC appliances and lighting although it is more expensive.
4. Cabling and screws. While this doesn't seem to be a highlight of the system itself you would need to consider how much wiring and fasteners you will need. And don't forget the Solar Panel(s)!

Solar Panel Systems How Do I Estimate My Solar Power System Needs and Size?

The first step in determining your solar power needs is, knowing what your typical average energy usage is. If your total energy usage is, on average, around 6000 kilowatts per year, you will have to determine how much of that will be generated by your solar panel array.

An alternative is to compromise: modify your lifestyle and energy consumption while allowing the solar panel to generate the majority of your reduced energy needs.

The cost per kilowatt for a professionally installed panel will be slightly higher. The total cost of your system would be $30,000, or $42,000 installed. A slightly smaller system can generate a portion of your energy usage, however, you will still be paying an energy bill in this case.
