Solar Power For Home use has a few negatives you might want to consider.
Grid tied or not? A grid tied system eliminates the toxic lead acid deep cycle batteries used by an independent solar power system. But additional upfront costs are required for the certification and approval by your utility company.
A stand alone or independent solar power system also has the inherent ability of not producing enough power to meet all of your needs. You could wire part of your home to be powered solely from solar power but then technical expertise would be needed.
Don't forget cost. Some of the systems, depending on your needs require 30-40K for an installation. Now consider how much the rebate is. If you figure your 20years worth of energy use (and your utility bill) would this really be offset by a home solar power system? If not then you might want to find a way to reduce your total average by installing a solar power system to augment the cost of your utility bill. In California, dropping your usage below the baseline may save you astronomical prices on energy usage.
