Passive Solar Heat relies on conduction, convection and radiance to transfer heat from one medium to another. This form of natural energy is of course free. But those who have designed tools to capture it sell them for ridiculous prices. While others have found that building there own tools can save a fortune on investment and energy savings. However, the diy-solar project oriented person also has no guarantee that would protect there home, rv or other property from damaged caused by one of thier ideas.

Still there are many who like to try their own application of using passive solar heat. They all keep basic concepts in mind: heat rises, cold sinks, hot water is less dense than cold water, flat black absorbs heat, black gloss will reflect light, light colors reflect heat and glass will trap heat. The video uses a fantastic example of thermosiphoning. This uses the principal that cold falls and heat rises while hot water is less than dense water.

Thermosiphoning water heater has many applications but most people use it to heat their household water. Some have used it as a pump to move water from a lower point to a higher point. While this is inefficient for most applications it is practical for smaller applications or experiments to prove that passive solar heat can be used to warm water.

Passive solar heat is also the main concept behind ZED or zero energy design. This is a very simple design that maximizes the use of glass in home building and materials that absorb heat. Passive solar heat, when used properly can reduce the energy cost of Solar Powered Homes.
