Passive Solar Home Heating
Currently there are two methods to use passive solar energy for water heating and home heating.
The concept behind the passive solar water system is as easy as it sounds. Let me explain, on a hot summer day, if you buy a soda or better yet an energy drink with a black coating and allow the it to sit in the sun for a few hours, you have a hot can of "stuff". This is the concept behind passive solar heating of water.
Trombe walls or a green houses are used to heat homes. Heating water using passive solar has two main ideas. Use a large tank coated with flat black or a chamber that will heat water as it passes through a ready made passive solar cell. These are known as indirect methods of heating.
The indirect method will preheat the water before entering your installed water heater. By using solar panels directly to heat the water and provide a separate storage tank painted flat black is also another. This will absorb more heat energy and reflect very little. The flat black painted tank will also provide as a hot water reserve.
Read as much as possible on passive solar water heating in your area before determining what type of solar hot water system is for you.
Many hot springs use passive solar design systems that are available without charge. You can also look at your local library, the Internet, and local water company.
