What is passive solar energy design? Passive Solar Energy design is the process of receiving heat from the sun and converting it or transferring it to personal use within a building.

Passive solar energy design is the most overlooked home design people seek. Mostly because of the certain design it brings to the home. The other reason this design has been dismissed is due to the large amount of glass needed. Glass is expensive, especially the double paned windows required to make the design work.

However, passive solar energy design, often referred to as zero energy design, is easy to understand. The glass allows light in and the surface area of your home is heated by the suns rays hitting the interior of your home. This provides heat. The most efficient designs use materials that will absorb the solar rays and provide heat when the sun goes down.

The concept of zero energy design is nothing new. It was brought to light by the carter administration but dismissed when the cost of these homes was realized. Now that we have another 'energy crisis' the cost of zero energy design homes was looked at again. And with new building materials and practices it has become viable and economical to design new homes with this concept in mind.
